There was a lot mumbling and muttering (or whatever the equivalent is in written form) about NYC during the Das Boot section, and whether or not Jay would end up there next. Well, sure enough, in these pages we find out he did. This section takes up almost directly after leaving the boat, and tracks his efforts during the first months to navigate the city and find a job and, maybe, love. Continues for several months in this fashion.

Well, perhaps against better judgement, I have arrived. Place smells like cement, decay and urine, and that’s on a good day. The whole city is a sidewalk, as it turns out; that same gritty grainy feel to it, too. The flat, dead color, or absence thereof that also seems reflected in most people’s eyes here. Impermeable too, and cold…
And me? I look for work. Unemployment at all-time high! Actually, what I did was sign up at TWO (count ‘em) temp agencies which may tide me through to something more special + shining + smiling comes my way…
Innocence is an innocent bystander, hit by stray bullets. Who said that?
