There was a lot mumbling and muttering (or whatever the equivalent is in written form) about NYC during the Das Boot section, and whether or not Jay would end up there next. Well, sure enough, in these pages we find out he did. This section takes up almost directly after leaving the boat, and tracks his efforts during the first months to navigate the city and find a job and, maybe, love. Continues for several months in this fashion.

Hello, NYC! i (2/26)

Feb (3… 4… 5?)?

Did I mention I’m in New York now?

Pounding the pavement too, along with the best of them. Woke + shopped + bought enough goods to tide me toward payday (?) Assuming, of course, such a day approaches…

Dreamt Dex Lightmore + I are walking through a market. Shopping for sundries + peripherals. Dex snags a box of dish detergent. On the way to the checkout, I suggest more toilet paper (I had brought just one roll earlier). Dan picks a cloverleaf of four rolls which I then notice is attached by webbing to a MAMMOTH box of the same. The store, like Staples, specializes in discounted industrial amount + sizes. So, Dex drags this box (refrigerator size) to checkout, and the lady pushes the buttons… “7.53”

I look at the price tag sticker that she has adhered to the surface of the toilet paper (no, on a can of soup…) and it says, “$753.00” AAAAGH. I’m so broke.

So, donned my respectable attire and headed into the madness, down to 5th Ave and 43rd to register for a temp agency for food services which could, according to Levina, employ me as soon as tomorrow if I purchase the necessary uniform (ie, black pants, black jacket…) However… came back to find that JR, in the meantime, had secured me an interview w/his boss where he works in light typing, phone calls, etc. Sounds smooth, easier and maybe even some $$.
